Training Division
Firefighters have dangerous and important jobs. They must also face unbelievable danger in burning buildings, rescuing people and animals and trying to keep onlookers safe while doing so. To become a Firefighter in the State of Georgia, you must pass a physical agility test and then pass required State training courses and tests.
Sandersville Fire Department firefighters maintain a rigorous training schedule under the direction of Engineer Ben Avant, the Fire Department's Training Officer and a State Certified Fire Instructor. All volunteer firefighters are state registered volunteer firefighters or higher. All career firefighters are Firefighter I certified.
Training is conducted on the first and third Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the Sandersville Firehouse. On an annual basis, the Department covers training objectives approved by the Georgia Firefighter Standards & Training Council and all Firefighters must participate in a minimum of 24 hours of annual training to maintain their certifications.
Candidates for firefighter training must be at least 18 years old, be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination, possess a high school diploma or G.E.D., have no felony convictions within 10 years of the date of employment or appointment, and have good moral character as determined by an investigation under the procedure approved by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council. Those who meet those standards are then required to take the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council's approved physical agility test and a series of specialized training courses.
