Sandersville is governed by part-time mayor, a mayor pro tem and four councilmen who are elected by post with day-to-day management responsibilities handled by an appointed city clerk. The mayor and mayor pro tem are elected at large.

The estimated population in 2017 was 5,571, just under the official 2010 census count. Compared to the rest of the country, Sandersville's cost of living is 20.79 percent lower than the U.S. average, making it a great place to live, work, own and operate a business and raise a family. The median home cost in Sandersville is $100,000.

Sandersville is industry-friendly and boasts four industrial parks and their proximity to interstate highways 16 and 20, the Norfolk Southern and Sandersville Railroad companies, and Washington County airport. Savannah, with its port facilities and international airport, offers a gateway to world markets. Agriculture is still important, along with a nursery industry and a healthy timber business. A number of manufacturing plants and a district Department of Transportation complex remain, while two peak power plants were built in 2002 and 2003.

The city covers total area of 10.2 square miles. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,245 households in the city. Of the total population, 36.9 percent of people are white, 62.3 percent are black, 0.4 percent are Hispanic or Latino, 0.5 percent are Asian and 0.3 percent claimed mixed heritage.

FREE COVID TESTING INFORMATION

Free COVID-19 testing is offered twice weekly in Sandersville -- Monday and Thursday from 8 a.m. until noon. For screening for testing through the North Central Health District, you must contact the COVID-19 testing number 844-987-0099 to get a referral for testing. The health district also offers testing on different days in each county in the district (see schedule here).
