The City of Sandersville has openings for part time Street Maintenance Workers.  Duties will include but not be limited to various manual labor tasks to assist with routine street maintenance and public works projects.
 
Minimum requirements: High school diploma or GED equivalent, valid GA driver’s license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
 
Minimum qualifications: Any combination of education, training, or experience to perform essential job functions.

CLASS SPECIFICATION
 
 
CLASS TITLE:             STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER – PART TIME                                    
DEPARTMENT:           STREET MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT                                                 
REPORTS TO:             STREET MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
 
 
JOB SUMMARY:
Performs various manual labor tasks and duties to assist department workers to complete public works projects.
 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

  • Cuts grass using a mower, Uses a weed eater to trim grounds; lubricates weed eater as needed; cleans around areas after cutting.
  •  Mow and spray along curbs, sidewalks and curb gutter lines. As directed, may mix chemicals for weed spraying equipment. Operate chain saw as necessary to clear storm damage.
     
  • Maintains the City owned cemetery grounds, parking lots, and other facilities, including mowing, edging lawn areas, and pruning shrubs and trees.
     
  • Responsible for raking debris and lifting heavy fork to place debris on truck.
     
  •  Interact with Water and Wastewater Department for the routine and non-routine task of storm sewer cleaning and maintenance.
  • Responsible for conducting required preventive maintenance work on assigned vehicles.
     
  • Perform work in accordance with all federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations and within mandated and appropriate safety standards.
  • Maintain excellent relations with co-workers.
  • Respond orally to public inquiries in a courteous manner, referring inquiries to an employee of higher classification as appropriate.
  • Coordinates with other departments in planning and execution of projects
  • Coordinate traffic control as needed.
  • Hauls dirt, gravel, asphalt, trash, and pipes to sites; checks the truck each morning before beginning operations.
  • Cleans out ditches; removes debris, trash and excess dirt as needed; picks up trash, leaves, and tree limbs from wooded areas and from the sides of the road.
  •  Rides in trucks and picks up loose trash, tree limbs, roots and debris in areas.
  • Assists truck driver to maintain truck after completion of route; checks oil and changes if necessary, refuels, greases parts as necessary, and washes and cleans truck.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned; duties may be performed in other public works departments, as needed.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
·        Knowledge of safe work practices.
·        Knowledge of the use of hand and small power tools.
·        Knowledge of maintenance techniques.
·        Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
·        Ability to take and follow instructions.
·        Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to the operation of heavy trucks and equipment.
·        Knowledge of the geography of the City including major streets and landmarks.
·        Ability to safely and effectively use street maintenance and construction equipment.
·        Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.
 
 
SUPERVISORY CONTROL: Specific, detailed guidelines covering all important aspects of the assignment are provided to the employee. The employee works in strict adherence to the guidelines. The supervisor must authorize deviations.
 
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this assignment is to perform the maintenance and cleaning tasks of the street department. The work provides necessary additional manpower for the completion of various departmental goals and objectives. The duties of this position are clear-cut and directly related; however, the work is made difficult due to inclement weather and miscellaneous activities around work areas.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to walk outdoors, climb ladders, excavations, stairs, and vehicles; sit in vehicle, reach with hands and arms, stoop, stretch, crawl, and crouch. While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly exposed to weather conditions, especially cold and hot temperatures, humidity, rain, and sun. Also exposed to airborne irritants, fumes, dust, gases, noxious odors, vibrations, electrical shock, and moving and/or mechanical parts. The incumbent's working conditions are typically very loud. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as lifting heavy objects.
 
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
·        High School Diploma or GED;
·        Valid Georgia Drivers License
·        Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
